This
is the 400th anniversary
of the legendary 1603 March of OSullivan Beara from the Beara
Peninsula, West Cork to Breifne, in the Leitrim Cavan area.
This
famous route is being developed as a Waymarked Way for walking,
cycling, heritage and clans. Seventy community groups in every town
and village on the route have decided to run a chain of festivals
throughout the summer of 2003.
This
chain of festivals is supported by Bord Failte, European Greenway
Association, Regional Tourism bodies, Waymarked Ways Committees,
National Heritage Council, Clans of Ireland Office, FÀS,
Leader Co-ops, and all County Councils along the route.
The
Heritage Council of Ireland has decided that this historic route
from the Beara Peninsula to Breifne will form part of the European
Greenways trail. It will be developed as a long distance walking,
cycling, heritage and clans route linking with walking and cycling
routes in Northern Ireland.
If
your passion is walking, cycling, heritage,
Irish language and Irish culture throughout the centuries,
traditional music or if your surname is associated with one
of the famous clan names or heritage houses along
the route, please check Greenways Festival
page and list of events.
