Beara -Breifne Greenway The O'Sullivan Beara Historic Route as part of the European Greenway

Clan: McGuire / Maguire

Other branches of the clan: Macguire, Magoir, Maguirey, Guare.
Irish Clan Name: Maguidir.

This surname written Maguire or McGuire, ranks among the forty commonest surnames in Ireland. It is interesting that in County Fermanagh where their ancestors were once the ruling Sept, the Maguire chief was at Enniskillen, where their castle was built beside Lough Erne. Maguire is the most usual spelling, but in the West of Ireland McGuire is the form favoured in County Mayo and County Roscommon. The McGuires were Chiefs or Princes of Fermanagh from about 1264 A.D. when they supplanted the former Cheiftans (O' Dainhin or Devin).

Ballyorgan is part of the ancestral home of the McGuires and forms a stage of the Beara-Breifne Greenway which is based on the historic march of O'Sullivan Beara in 1603.
