Kealkill

The Beara Peninsula is the home of O'Sullivan Beara and will host 11 events to commemorate the 400th Anniversary. The first event will be in Kealkill on the grounds of Carriganass Castle, the day's event will include a Battle Re-enactment Company.
The start of a walking festival will take place covering the local walks in the Kealkill area. An official opening of Phase 1 of Carriganass Castle will take place. A budget of over 300,000 Euro is in place by the local Committee. And up to 1,000 people are expected in Kealkill on this date due to the historic importance of the Castle, which has laid idle for hundreds of years. .

Ballylickey

Thursday 28th August 2003
Ballylickey Tourist Association will host a banquet adjacent to the village. Traditional Clan dress will be worn to create the atmosphere.

Glengarriff/Adrigole/Castletownbere/Bere Island/Eyeries

Friday 29th August

4.30 p.m A reception for the Captains and Officers of the naval ships will take place in Glengarriff .

7.00 p.m. Walkers will arrive into Glengarriff and Cyclists who have travelled over 300 miles from Leitrim to Beara, a reception will be held in the village and a barbecue and music will entertain the crowd well into the night.

Saturday 30th August

8.30 a.m. A walk and a cycle to Roosk Trafrask, Adrigole will take place, the naval ships, yachts and fishing boats will form a flotilla in the bay and will anchor off Roosk where a commemoration will take place of the 5 O'Sullivan Brothers; Albert, Madison, Abel Joseph Eugene, Francis Henry, and George Thomas, who were lost at sea serving with the US Navy in the 2nd World War. The location of the commemoration is the Parish where the ancestors of the 5 O'Sullivan Brothers left in 1850 to seek opportunities in the USA. The plaque will be unveiled by Kelly Sullivan Loughren who is the granddaughter of the Albert O'Sullivan who died in this tragic event.


11.45 a.m. A short walk to where the original house of the O'Sullivan family was, will take place. A plaque to the ancestors of the 5 O'Sullivan brothers will be unveiled. Refreshments and lunch will be served in the village.


2.45 p.m. An event will take place on Bere Island where the flotilla of ships continue their voyage into Berehaven Harbour. The large crowd will continue their trip by car, bus and ferry to the island. An official opening of the refurbished Mortello Tower will take place. Talks will be given of the importance of Berehaven Harbour and Bantry Bay from 1796 to the present day.

From 4-6 p.m. Refreshments and entertainment will take place in Rerrin Village, Bere Island.

4pm. There will be a lifesaving exercise involving a helicopter from Shannon and Castletownbere Lifeboat.

8.30 p.m. till late A banquet will be hosted in Cametringane Hotel, Castletownbere.

Sunday 31st August

9.45 a.m. A cycle and walk will take place from Adrigole to Castletownbere arriving at 11.45am. A statue of Tim Harrington, Lord Mayor of Dublin in the early 1900's who was born in Castletownbere will be unveiled. The group will visit the "Call of the Sea" - Marine Heritage Centre for talks on the centre and Smuggling throughout the Centuries.

From 4.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. A Gaelic Football Match will take place in Eyeries followed by an American, European Naval Soccer Match. Prize giving will take place in Eyeries Village at 5:45 p.m.

Music and Entertainment will take place in Eyeries and Castletownbere late into the night.
