The
400th Anniversary of the Battle of Dunboy was held on the June Bank
Holiday Weekend 2002.
Dr. Liam Downey from the Heritage Council unveiled a plaque to commemorate
this occasion and the acting Clan Chieftain of the O'Sullivans -
Mr Nealie O'Sullivan made a speech to the large crowd that had gathered.
Mr Michael Manning - Cork Kerry Tourism, Mr John Murphy - Chairman
of Beara Tourist & Development Association and numerous Councillors
also made speeches on the day.
A
battle re-enactment company travelled down from Kildare and Dublin.
They were dressed in Irish traditional costumes and English battle
costumes of the 1600's.
The
Bantry Longboat arrived with Mr Carew who was in charge of the English
forces for the re-enactment. The Irish Troops were under the control
of Coleman O'Sullivan
(from Eyeries Village on the Beara Peninsula). The Battle took place
for over 30 minutes and the finale of the battle was reached when
Owen O'Sullivan (from Castletownbere) arrived on horseback dressed
as O'Sullivan Beara - he had come to collect his troops for the
famous March to Leitrim. Mr Teddy Black - noted storyteller and
comedian (from Castletownbere) encouraged the troops into the most
ferocious battle, which had not been seen for over 400 years.
The evening ended with step dancing from the ICA, music by Ashley
& Noreen and traditional music by Eckie and his Group.
