Beara -Breifne Greenway The O'Sullivan Beara Historic Route as part of the European Greenway




Highwood, Co. Sligo

Highwood village is located above the eastern shores of Lough Arrow, on the high flat plain of Moytirra.

The area is steeped in history, archaeology and folklore, attractions include Moytirra Court Tomb (known locally as the Giants Graves.) The 'Eglone' consists of fourteen megalithic monuments located on the limestone upland, along with the lines of glacial erratic boulders. The Labby is an enormous portal tomb or dolmen dating to c.3300 BC. Lough Nasool (meaning: 'Lake of the Eye') is traditionally associated with Balor of the Evil Eye, leader of the Fomorians, an ancient demonic race, that are said to have lived on Tory Island in County Donegal.

Clan Name

Highwood is part of the ancestral home of the MacDonagh clan and forms a stage of the Beara-Breifne Greenway which is based on the historic march of O'Sullivan Beara in 1603.

Greenways Festival 2003

Highwood is talking part in the Greenways Festival in summer 2003 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the legendary 1603 march of O’Sullivan Beara from the Beara Peninsula to the Breifne area. Click here for info on the events
