Beara -Breifne Greenway The O'Sullivan Beara Historic Route as part of the European Greenway



 

Templederry, Co. Tipperary

Templederry is a lovely little village,close to Cooneen hill and Ballincurra hills. It is located in excellent walking country with breathtaking surroundings and ample wildlife, There are strenuous hill walks by beautiful lochs, to gentler, shorter routes off the main loop, which are also suitable for wheelchairs. There is ample car parking space in Templederry village. There opportunities for beautiful scenic cycling paths and roadways through one of the most peaceful settings in Ireland.

Ancient monuments in the surrounding countryside are the megalithic tombs at Curreeny Common and Cooneen Hill standing stones at Ballinlough, cairns on Cooneen Hill Hillforts, mounds and moated sites at Ballinacurragh Hill, Ballinlough, Tiermoyle and Knockadigeen Hill. Holy Well at Latteragh Castle Ottway at Templederry.

Safe angling in peaceful surroundings may be experienced on stretches of the Nenagh River and it’s tributaries.

The history of the area includes O’Sullivan Beara’s March through the parish, the Dukes of Ormond and Castle Ottway and the life of Father Kenyon, who is buried in Templederry.

Full hotel accommodation may be found only 30 minutes drive away in Nenagh and Thurles. There are also some local B & B’s and campsites shortly becoming available. Car hire is available in both Nenagh and Thurles.

There are many traditional bars throughout the parish, offering live music, traditional sessions and local characters.

There are all currently to be enjoyed but as part of the redevelopment of the parish, future plans intended to come into fruition within the next two years include: farm holidays, craft fairs.

Greenways Festival 2003

Templederry is talking part in the Greenways Festival in summer 2003 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the legendary 1603 march of O’Sullivan Beara from the Beara Peninsula to the Breifne area. Click here for info on the events
